Steve, great post and oh so true! Here's my little HostGator negative review. I jumped on the HostGator bandwagon based primarily on the unlimited bandwidth advertisement. Everything was going fine for a couple of years until my site got too big for its britches, so to speak. I was thrilled watching my site grow from a handful of visitors to getting thousands. Then came the email alerting me of "excessive resource usage". Unlimited was great when my site wasn't getting very many hits. Unlimited became an issue when I started using up bandwidth. Now, I've learned about 'overselling' and the shady practices of companies like HostGator. Sure, it's on their ToS. But, it sure feels like a bit of a scam in retrospect. It's the same old lesson you probably learned in grade school: "if it seems to be too good to be true, then it probably is." In the case of HostGator, I can attest 100% that it is too good to be true. Check out their homepage. There aren't any asterisks on unlimited bandwidth or unlimited disk space. I thought I exercised due diligence in researching HostGator. I read an awful lot of positive reviews. Hopefully, posts like the one Steve wrote will help educate unsuspecting people looking for a decent hosting provider. Maybe this post and comment will save someone out there a lot of grief and stress.
